New
Advertising Options Launched
by Google Base
Google recently launched the beta version of Google Base,
Google’s own classifieds.
Google Base will create an enormous challenge to traditional
classified advertising publishers who use the pay-to-advertise model.
Since all Google Base ads are free, the value of the contextual ads
around it will soar. It is also expected that the price pressure on
traditional classified advertising publishers will intensify.
Users go to base.google.com to upload single or bulk
items based on pre-selected categories similar to newspaper classified
sites such as Jobs, Vehicles, and Wanted Ads. Other categories include
News and Articles, Course Schedules, People Profiles, and Recipes or
you can create your own category. Visit
Google Base now.

Watch for Advertising
Opportunities with Personalized Stamps
Personalized
stamps are a creative alternative from the traditional
flag or holiday design. Putting your face on a stamp
adds a personal touch to business letters, especially
if you are a small business owner. Although advertising
is currently not allowed, business owners well-known
by their customers can use this as an indirect advertising
tool.
The
current advertising restriction states, “USPS rules for
customized postage forbid the use of ‘advertising.’ This
rule may be relaxed in the future.” “Relaxed” is
the key term. Personalized stamps are relatively new and as their
popularity increases, restrictions may be lifted. Be on the lookout
for the opportunity to put your name or logo on personalized
stamps when mailing marketing materials.

Postal
Rate Increase Stays within Expectations
The U.S. Postal
Service’s independent Postal Rate Commission approved a
5.4% across-the-board rate increase this month. This increase
will take effect in early 2006 and will apply to regular-rate
periodicals. The decision was supported by major mailers and
associations including American Business Media, the Magazine
Publishers of America, and the Direct Marketing Association.
Although rate
hikes are not favorable, the increase was in line with expectations.
As with any rate increase, publishers try to offset the increase
by cutting circulation, partnering with other companies and/or
co-mailing. Publishers are already beginning to prepare for additional
rate increases in 2007.

| Online ad spending
was up approximately 10% in the third quarter over the second
quarter, according to a study by Deutsche Bank in conjunction
with MediaPost. The study of 87 media executives found that 60%
said their clients would likely put more money into Web advertising
in the fourth quarter than in the third, and 36% predicted an
increase of more than 10% in the fourth quarter.
