Electronic Power Design, Inc. Brochure

Marion adds another addition to our portfolio with a new brochure design for Electronic Power Design, Inc.

A Houston-based firm Electronic Power Design, Inc. (EPD), is considered one of the top design, engineering and manufacturing companies in the world for integrated electrical power systems.

They are committed to building quality products for their customers, using industry experience and application knowledge to power technological innovation, and creating an environment of personal development for their employees.

One purpose of the brochure was to reflect the growing global presence of EPD, in a diverse number of industries. Hence the imagery of offshore oil and gas platforms, wind mills, solar panels, marine boats and mining projects.

To reflect the identity of the brand, we used red as a secondary color throughout the brochure to match the logo, world maps  to portray EPD’s international presence and a metallic background on the cover for a clean, industrial look.

Also the brochure includes many images of their complex power equipment in cities all over the world and of their manufacturer facilities in Houston, Brazil and China.

EPD chose a 9” X 12”, 12 page, full-color brochure with a pocket in the back with slits for business cards which comes in handy for any inserts up to 8 1/2” X 11”. Electric Power Design Brochure

Get Your Business in the Cloud

Cloud computing, also known as cloud technology, seems like a tech term, but it’s quite simple to understand and use. It is simply having every piece of data you could possibly imagine at your fingertips. The data is mobile, transferable and instantly accessible. Think of “the cloud” as an app to access your life via pictures, documents, videos and music whenever and wherever you want to access it.

The key to enabling the portability and interactivity that is “the cloud” is to synch up your data among your devices, as well as access to shared data. Shared data is the data we access online in any number of places, such as social networks, banks, blogs, newsrooms, paid communities, etc.

Here are the benefits for cloud computing:

  • Cloud computing reduces costs for hardware (Paying for computers, software, networking management and overall IT expenses.) Additionally, with cloud computing, you only pay for what you use.
  • You can scale down your business’ storage needs seamlessly rather than having to purchase software or hardware, which can be expensive.
  • With cloud technology, there are automatic updates. Therefore, there is no need for an IT department or person to worry about paying for future updates for software and hardware.
  • Employees, partners and clients have remote access with cloud technology, and it allows them to update information wherever they are, rather than having to run back the office.
  • With your company’s data safely stored on secure data centers instead of your server room, disaster relief won’t be a concern, making power outages due to hurricanes, earthquakes etc., a non-factor.
  • Cloud computing services are easy to set up!
  • Cloud computing accomplishes a better response time in most cases than your standard server and hardware.
  • Cloud computing allows small companies to compete more effectively with some of the larger businesses, balancing the playing field. This technology allows your small business to utilize the same tools Fortune 500 companies use because your business will only pay for what it needs.

A great example of cloud computing is online email. Some big names that offer online email are: Google, Yahoo, Microsoft, etc. Your emails are stored on their servers but they can be accessed from anywhere as long as you have an internet connection.

So whether you are a small business that’s been established or a new business trying to get on your feet, cloud technology may be the way to go.

Will you consider cloud computing for your business? Marion can give your website design a boost before you sent it to the cloud.

QR Codes and Gas and Texas – Oh My!

The Texas Department of Agriculture regularly performs calibration tests at retail gas stations to ensure the station is not deceitful, by overcharging the customer at the pump. While they do their best in monitoring the gas retailers, it is possible fall through the cracks.

This is why, on Thursday, September 1, 2011, the Texas Department of Agriculture announced that it has integrated QR Codes, making it mandatory for them to be displayed on retailers’ gas station registration. The department believes this will help them monitor those gas stations who are trying to cheat their customers.

“Through this consumer information sticker, drivers can use their Smartphone to go on site, find out the history and the information about the location that they’re filling up their car,” said Todd Staples, Texas Commissioner of Agriculture.

First you’d need to download a QR Code scanner. Then, when you get to a gas station, all you must do is pull out your Smartphone and scan the QR Code to see reviews past customers submitted about that location.  Or, if you have a bad experience, scanning the QR Code will also direct you to a site where you can leave a complaint for future customers to read.

“Fifteen million motorists in Texas can be inspectors and the eyes and ears of the Texas Department of Agriculture,” said Staples.  If there are no QR Codes to be found at the gas station, then you should call the state to report it.

Approximately 95% of gas stations abide by the rules, but for those that do not, the fines they will face have been increased substantially. Hopefully the Texas Department of Agriculture will be successful in weeding out the bad seeds.

Will you be scanning these QR Codes before you pump gas? It might be worthwhile to see what people are saying about your gas retailer.

Social Screening: Why you should watch what you post.

Be careful what you share on your social media accounts. Employers are now looking at what people post before they make the decision to hire someone. Below is a great infographic on how companies are using social media to hire and fire employees. The percentages are very interesting!

Please click to view larger size.

As a company it’s important to oversee your employee’s social media activities. They represent your company, and you don’t want others to get the wrong impression. So, letting your employees know that if they are personally tied to your company in some way, they must maintain some level of professionalism.

Let’s not forget about the Chipotle CAT-tastrophe. (Yes, we went for the cheesey clichéd humor.)
